„…and Europe will be stunned“

A film triology by Yael Bartana. Consisting of the short films Mary Koszmary (Nightmares), Mur i wieza (Wall and Tower), and Zamach (Assassination)

All films were shown at the Polish Pavilion at the 54th Venice Biennale and will be presented in Austria for the very first time. Each film has a length of approx. 15 to 20 minutes.

Abstract:
Yael Bartana’s work is permeated by the history of the Israeli state and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and explores the complex relations between Jews, Poles and other Europeans in the age of globalisation.
Aesthetically referencing propaganda films of the 1930s, Bartana weaves together contrary movements that in different ways contributed to the founding of Israel: European anti-Semitism, colonialism, Socialism, and Zionism. The origin and development of Zionism are scrutinized in light of Israel’s political stance toward the Palestinians and at a certain point the audience is geographically transported from Israel/Palestine to Poland, where a fictive political movement – “The Jewish Renaissance Movement in Poland” – advocating a return of 3 000 000 Jews, emerges amid historical layers and reflections.

Presenters:
Oleksiy Radynski, Editor-in-chief of Krytyka Polityczna, Kiev.
Michal Borucki, Manager of Brave New World Cultural Center; Member of Krytyka Polityczna, Warsaw.
