Ständig fällt sein Name in Millöckers melodienreicher und kunstvoll orchestrierten "Räubersg'schicht", aber der mafiose und gefürchtete Bandit Gasparone bleibt die ganze Geschichte über ein Phantom. Der Syrakuser Podestá Nasoni trachtet, seinen Sohn Sindulfo mit Gräfin Carlotta zu vermählen, um an deren Erbschaft heranzukommen. Graf Erminio versucht die unlauteren Absichten Nasonis zu durchkreuzen, indem er die Gräfin zunächst als mutmaßlicher Räuberhauptmann entführen lässt, um als edler Ritter ihr Herz gewinnen zu können, und ihr schlussendlich die Augen über die wahren Heirats-Motive Sindulfos zu öffnen...
Nasoni, the mayor of Syracuse, Sicily, schemes to arrange the marriage of his son Sindulfo to countess Carlotta, realizing that the young widow, unbeknown to her, is soon to come into a sizable fortune. Count Erminio has other plans. Disguised as the notorious robber Gasparone, he first arranges for Carlotta’s abduction and the seizure of her fortune. He then saves her and exposes Nasoni and his son’s motives. He arranges for the return of the money and wins Carlotta’s heart in the end. This story about bandits and smugglers contains one of Milloecker’s richest operetta scores.
