Jean Dubuffet’s exhibition L’Art Brut: a manifesto for an art that doesn’t look like art

Organized by Jean Dubuffet, the exhibition L’Art Brut took place from October to November 1949 at the René Drouin gallery, in Paris. It was an exceptional event for more than one reason. Featuring 200 works, taken primarily from the collections of the Compagnie de l’Art Brut, it marked a milestone in the development of the concept of Art Brut as understood by the artist at the time. Moreover, the pieces shown represented the original kernel of the future museum in Lausanne, inaugurated twenty-seven years later, on February 26, 1976.
